Spring Run School Announces New Jersey’s First Year Round Program - 5/1/14

Posted on May 01, 2014

Spring Run School will offer a longer Extended School Year program for the summer of 2014, becoming New Jersey’s first year round program. “We are happy the Hunterdon County Superintendent of Schools approved our 43 day Extended School year program so we can provide services from July 1 through August 29,” commented Paul Semegran, Spring Run School principal.

The Extended School Year Program provides additional time, beyond the school year, to help students with disabilities develop their academic and social skills. If your child receives special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), he or she may be eligible for this program. Students with special needs from non-sending districts are welcome to apply for placement.

Over school breaks many students do not retain skills learned, and then must be re-taught those skills when back in school. The continuation of a school program into the summer months has been shown to provide the structure and routine some children with disabilities need to avoid regression. Spring Run School’s ESY program is specifically designed to facilitate continuing progress and learning in the summer months. The program is tailored to the needs of each student’s IEP.

The summer program will include full-scale, individualized academic instruction, physical education, art / ceramics, life skills, financial literacy, vocational instruction with job coaching and weekly extended classroom experiences. Spring Run features an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) area, where students can practice washing, drying, ironing and folding clothes, cooking, table/menu preparation, washing and drying of dishes, making a bed, and other self-sufficiency activities. A variety of off-campus experiences will facilitate social skills and encourage community participation.

Spring Run School is CEA’s NJ-certified private secondary school serving students with autism and multiple disabilities. Spring Run School provides additional resources and services to students on the autism spectrum and has enhanced their academic and transitional services for all special needs students who face greater social and technological challenges as they become adults.
