Lore Macdonald – Horizons Program - 7/17/13

Posted on July 17, 2013

I had the opportunity to name Lore Macdonald a NJ Hero today for the amazing work she has done and continues to do for the Horizons Summer Program at Rumson Country Day School.  Eighteen years ago she co-founded this 6-week long summer educational program for at-risk youth in Red Bank.  This academic and recreational summer enrichment program started with just 15 children in a kindergarten class.  Today, they serve 128 local children grades K-8 living in low-income circumstances.  Watching Lore with the students, it was clear to see that her love of the program and these children stretches far beyond the summer.  She keeps in touch with these graduates into high school and beyond.  I spoke with 2 students who have been in the program since Kindergarten and they explained how they love coming back year after year.  One of them is the valedictorian of their class and attributes much of her success to the help she received from Horizons.  The program focuses on developing the whole child through experiences that enhance their self-esteem, social growth, and community responsibility, while encouraging a life-long interest in learning.  It is truly an incredible public-private partnership that has changed the lives of so many young people in the Red Bank area.  I thank Lore Macdonald for starting this important program and am honored to name her a New Jersey Hero!  For more information on Horizons, please visit their website: http://www.horizonsnational.org/rumson
