Asia D. Smith – Purple R.E.I.G.N.S. Social Services - 3/26/13

Posted on March 26, 2013

Today I had the pleasure of meeting an incredible and brave New Jersey Hero, Asia Smith.  After escaping a violent and abusive relationship, Asia knew she was going to be more than just a survivor.  She wanted to help other men and women who suffered the same abuse.  With that, she took the money she had saved to attend law school and started the non-profit foundation Purple R.E.I.G.N. Social Services.  RE.I.G.N. is an acronym for Restoration, Empowerment, Integrity, Grace, and Nobility.  Purple R.E.I.G.N. gives resources and support to help victims get out of their abusive relationships safely.

Asia gave me a tour of the Bessie Mae Women’s Center, where Purple R.E.I.G.N. is operated out of.  After our tour, I had the chance to sit down with 3 victim/survivors of domestic abuse, Lynne, Deborah, and Shareen.  They were brave enough to share their stories of abuse with me and tell me their experiences with Purple R.E.I.G.N.  All 3 women said that meeting a strong and caring woman like Asia, who had been through the same abuse, helped them to overcome their desperate situations.  It was so inspiring to meet with these women and learn about how Asia helped them reclaim and change their lives.  As Asia’s motto states, she helps men and women “Turn Tragedy to Triumph”.  I’m incredibly proud to recognize Asia Smith as a NJ Hero!  To learn more about Purple R.E.I.G.N., please visit their website:
