Today I announced the recipients of the 2014 NJH Spirit of a Hero Scholarship at Drumthwacket. The Spirit of a Hero Scholarship was started in 2013 for New Jersey seniors in high school to use towards their post secondary education. All applicants were asked to demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and community contribution, in the the spirit of New Jersey Heroes. After launching this year’s program in January, we received over 700 applications in an 8 week period. Through our competitive selection process, only 3% of our applicants were awarded a scholarship. Each recipient received $5,000 to go towards their college tuition and fees.

Our twenty-two recipients had the opportunity to invite members of their family and one of their mentors to attend today’s ceremony. We called the students up to the stage and shared a little bit about the incredible service these young men and women are giving to their communities and our state. I had the pleasure of meeting all of them individually and learning about the amazing things they have been able to accomplish at such a young age through their volunteerism. Congratulations to all of our recipients and best of luck at college this fall!
