Kristina Guttadora – Farmers Against Hunger - 8/31/15
After a very close race between our most recent online hero nominees, I am proud to name Kristina Guttadora of NJ Agricultural Society’s “Farmers Against Hunger” the 36th New Jersey Hero!
Kristina, the Program Director of Farmers Against Hunger and Executive Director of the New Jersey Agricultural Society, was up against two other outstanding nominees – Adam Lowy of Move for Hunger and Gary Oppenheimer of AmpleHarvest.org – who are all working to eliminate hunger. The Farmers Against Hunger program has been “harvesting for the hungry since 1996,” and in 2011, Kristina took over as the organization’s Program Director.
Farmers Against Hunger is a collaborative effort that currently helps over 70 partner agencies, including state food banks, soup kitchens and pantries, by providing free donations. “Glean teams” come to local farms to help harvest extra produce which may otherwise be plowed underground, which is then donated to agencies to provide fresh produce to those who would otherwise not have access to it. Farmers Against Hunger also collects leftover produce from grocery stores and wholesale suppliers that would have gone to waste. They are able to collect 1.3 million pounds of food every year. Kristina hopes to expand the fresh produce and gleaning distribution program of Farmers Against Hunger, and believes that the online hero program has helped her reach a wider audience of donors and volunteers. Through her work with this program and the fight to eliminate hunger, Kristina is an excellent addition to our NJ Heroes community. Congratulations and keep up the great work!
