Historic Camden Cemetery Resurrected - UrbanPromise - 6/2/15
Urban Promise made headlines once again for the incredible work they are doing in the city of Camden, NJ.
A procession took place to pay respects and to mark the resurrection and rededication of a long-forgotten burial ground at Federal and 38th streets. The cemetery, which contains about 300 graves, was established in 1854, includes 123 graves for African-American Civil War veterans and other early African-Americans who settled in Camden. The graveyard is being renamed Johnson Cemetery Memorial Park.
UrbanPromise Academy had recently been designated as the caretakers of the long-neglected and overgrown city-owned cemetery by the city council. It had become a haven for drug users and trash dumpers, until the high school students at UrbanPromise began cleaning it up and taking care of it three years ago. Their interest was spurred after learning Civil War history and watching a video about the graves by local filmmaker Kevin Walker.
