Operation Beachhead Celebrates Veterans at the 1st Beach Day of 2014! - 6/24/14
Operation Beachhead welcomed members of the Spinal Cord unit from the Lyons VA Hospital in Lyons, NJ on June 21st at North Beach in Sea Girt, NJ. Many volunteers came out to greet, assist, and show their gratitude to the visiting veterans. Among the supporters were members of the St Rose Hockey Team from Belmar, NJ, members of the NYFD (New York City Fire Department), therapy dogs Norman and Wilson from Therapy Dogs International, the Sea Girt lifeguards, Sea Girt staff, and the Sea Girt Beach Patrol, who helped move equipment.
Once the veterans and their families arrived, the veterans were helped into wetsuits and then the fun began. Some members choose to use kayaks, while others were assisted in their first surfboard surfing experience. Every participant was willing to engage in the new activities and trust in the volunteers for their enjoyment and safety. Some of the family members were also treated to a surfing lesson!
After the beach activities, participants were provided with a canvas and paint supplies to each add their own design to complete a collaborated abstract art painting. This painting has become a staple of each Operation Beachhead Day.
