Yolanda Gadson – I Have a Dream Foundation, Newark Chapter - 5/31/17

Posted on May 31, 2017

Today I was honored to announce Yolanda Gadson, the Executive Director of the I Have a Dream Foundation in Essex County, as my 48th New Jersey Hero! Yolanda Gadson is the 3rd Hero to be named in 2017, and I am pleased to give this award to someone who is dedicated to helping youth succeed in the class room, and beyond.

The I Have a Dream Foundation’s mission is to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty by providing long-term support and programming that promotes personal empowerment, resulting in high school and higher education graduation. The foundation supports students in Newark with comprehensive programming and services from early elementary school through high school. Along with giving academic support, it is dedicated to developing students’ life skills and social-emotional development. After graduation, the students enroll in the program, called Dreamers, and receive guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education and continued support during their college journey.

Yolanda was appointed Executive Director two years ago, and she has made it her vision to ensure that all children, regardless of socioeconomic background, should be given the opportunity to complete high school, go on to post-secondary  education, and achieve their full potential while becoming productive global citizens.

I commend Yolanda for all of her hard work, and for helping the Dreamers of Newark achieve their highest potential. It is so important for all children to have the support that they may need to succeed, and Newark and all of New Jersey is grateful to have Yolanda doing this great work.
