Mary Robinson – Imagine - 2/22/17

Posted on February 22, 2017

Today, I was thrilled to announce Mary Robinson, founder and Executive Director of Imagine, a grief support center, as my 46th New Hersey Hero and first NJ Hero of 2017! I am so excited to honor someone who is dedicated to helping children and adults cope with the losses of a loved one in Union County.

Imagine is a free, year-round, grief support center for children and families coping with the loss of a loved one, or for children who have a parent or sibling with a terminal, chronic, or life threatening illness. Mary founded the organization in 2011, forty years after she received a sympathy card from a neighbor after her father died. This note served as the inspiration for Imagine, as she felt that all adults played a crucial role in helping a child recover after such a life altering event.

Imagine is founded on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment and that the role of peers and a caring, healthy adult in the life of a grieving child is critical. Imagine utilizes the peer support group model, the healing arts, physical play and movement, service to others and community gatherings to provide a safe and healing environment for coping with painful feelings.

I want to thank Mary for all of her efforts in making Imagine a supportive and comfortable place for all children to go, to receive support after experiencing a heavy loss. It is so inspiring to see Mary’s dedication to helping children and families recover, and to find peace after the death of a loved one.
